Priceless

*Daniel’s pov* I tried and tried to find something worthwhile in Rose’s cabin. I didn’t find anything that seemed out of work. I don’t know if I could ever call her Aubrey. She will always be Rose for me. Rose. Delicate, gentle, and strong. I needed to know what secrets she was hiding that was troubling her. I would not think twice before taking all those horrible things away from her at any cost and hiding her safe from the entire world. She deserves calm and peace. She deserves everything. Just as I get searching the last cupboard, the shrill ring of my phone alerts me. My stomach twists when I see it’s Sophie calling. I had this weird feeling nagging at me that I pushed down not so long ago. “Is everything okay?” are the words that drop out of my mouth just as I answer the call. “Dan- Daniel, um,” she takes a breath in before continuing, “um, I think you should come here-” I end the call before she says anything more. This can’t be good. The familiar feeling of p

There are days when you don’t understand what is happening and then there are days when inspite of knowing and understanding those things, you don’t want to acknowledge them so the thought of reality doesn’t bother you. It’s not really a healthy way of coping but sometimes it’s exactly what you need so that you can save yourself from the sheer terror of the reality being actually true. Daniel was doing the same. The idea that whatever notion he had known of Rose for so long when turned out to be just a fake identity, he tried to turn his mind into feeling that it wasn’t true at all. It felt like he was in a thriller movie and being the main character, he had no idea what to do. What was he supposed to do? He did not even know what a person Rose, or now that he knows Aubrey, really was. There were moments when he thought that Rose was just a figment of his imagination; someone like her was too kind and smart and beautiful to be real, but never in his wildest dreams did he

Aubrey Matthews

“Oh god, yes, Bree. How many times should I say that? She is our Bree, Aubrey Matthews.” Daniel’s world paused for a minute. There was nothing going on in his mind apart from plain confusion. She was not some Aubrey, she was Rose, his Rose Whistleberry. What if the one that the lady was referring as Aubrey was a long lost twin of Rose? What if the lady is mistaking Rose for someone who looks like her but isn’t her? That must be the case, right? She was Rose Whistleberry. Right? He wasn’t going to question everything he knows about her just because of one thing that someone else said. While he was questioning this, the old lady had disappeared somewhere. He appreciated the solitude, he needed it at the moment. There was definitely some confusion here, he was sure of it. In a while, the lady returned with a file of some sort. It was very old file from the looks of it. “Boy, here,” she said, “I don’t know why you are calling her Rose or who you are to her today but i

The first hint

It had been three days. Three days since Daniel had found that pendrive in Rose’s house. The entire thing, of course, was a huge surprise to him. He had contacted some of his IT friends to open that pen-drive, most of them turned out to be unsuccessful in cracking open the file. His last hope, last resort was Sam, his colleague from one of his jobs. He was just as good as Vic and Daniel hoped that he could be the missing key to the puzzle. The puzzle was more complex than he had anticipated; more excruciating and just as confusing. There were so many questions running through his mind for the past three days. Why would someone break into her house? Why did they not steal anything? Why did Rose had a secret box in her house? And most importantly, what was in the pen-drive if it had been safekept like such. The answers were hidden in the pen-drive and he was going to solve them no matter what. On the other hand, Sophia had been more and more intrigued behind Claire. She

The secret

Sometimes when you are not ready for it the most unexpected thing swoops up in your life. But not necessarily in a good or bad way, just very unusual. Sophie had been sitting on the couch by Rose’s bed for the past two hours and working on her laptop for the new marketing scheme she had been trying to make. Daniel had called her abruptly and had just said how he was going to Rose’s house. There had been no calls after it. Sophie just felt like she could give him his time. Daniel had been running back and forth from the hospital to his house where he’d just go for a shower or a change of clothes. He just felt like he couldn’t completely trust the hospital staff, which to be honest was bizarre, but no one said anything to him. Just as she was thinking of going for a coffee, she heard the click of the door. In came Claire, the French niece of the CEO who had not visited when mostly everyone had. Her manicured nails tapping incessantly on the door made Sophie groan and open the d

The revelation

Today had been particularly tough for Daniel. The news of Rose being in a coma brought back the memories that he had tried to bury deep into the dwells of his mind. The déjà vu was so strong that it was hard for him to stay in the grip of reality. We all have memories attached to places. When we visit a place with someone, the trip stays etched to the core parts of our memory. And when we go to that place the next time those memories come back alive in our mind. Some detail stays in our subconscious that we don’t completely remember, our brain attaches the memory with our present. That is the true sense of déjà vu. Going to Rose’s house wasn’t about a place, it was a memory to bask in her presence. The burgers and the fights, the movie night on the couch, the updates from the office when she wasn’t coming; all these moments seemed like a fever dream now. It’s funny that even if those days were just around the corner, in this moment they felt like from ages ago. She is in that

The letter

Image
There are certain moments when you want nothing more than watch a single movie a thousand times or listen to your favorite song on a loop to get the certain comfort you’re looking for. Sometimes the comfort isn’t through the songs or those movies; sometimes the comfort is the person with you listen the songs to or watch the movies with. Daniel had been reading that letter over and over again in his mind. ‘MY DEAR DANIEL’ ‘MY’ He tried so hard not to crack the genuine smile after reading the first word. The strong persona that he had reserved was saved for just a few moments after the letter was in his hands. The neatly folded paper kept in an envelope was just a reminder of how she was. Elegant and neat. The letter read: “ My dear Daniel, I couldn’t ever tell this to your face so here is this letter. I have found a better opportunity in New York and would have to immediately shift there. London has been my home for so long and I will surely miss it and the people too.

Uncomfortable silence

Image
Daniel was sleeping on the couch kept next to Rose’s bed, with ruffled hair and still in the clothes from the previous day. He tried not to fall asleep and kept checking her heart rate, again and again, to ensure that she was alright. But with the passing of time, the exhaustion got to him and the sleep that he kept putting off for the next few minutes came to him and turned deep easily from the weary day. “…and again you prove me wrong” he heard a voice whisper slowly. With a grunt and slow rise from the couch, wiping his hands in front of his face trying to bring himself back to reality, he woke up and saw a guy with his back to him. Just as he was going to say something, he saw Amelia enter the room, just as usual in her classic blue dress and a blue bouquet in her hand. He stood up from his couch, and after checking Rose’s vitals, he saw that the guy was Simon. “Oh sorry Daniel, we didn’t want to wake you up,” a voice said from behind Amelia who he found to be Gerald. “

Hope

Image
She’s going to be alright. She’s going to be alright. She’s going to be alright. This was the only thing that was running through Daniel’s mind that day. Sometimes when the situation is going against us, we don’t completely accept it. We try to convince ourselves otherwise. Somehow we try to keep that hope lightened up; wishing that something will change with our thoughts. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t but that hope itself is strong enough to keep our minds calm. Rose was shifted from the Intensive care but due to some complications, she had flat-lined two hours ago. The sheer panic that Daniel had experienced was one of the worst feelings he had felt. The déjà vu. Doctors had managed to control the situation and bring her back. Those fifteen minutes were the most torturous moments. She almost died. It’s funny how everything changes in just one moment. Since that moment, Daniel had been stuck near Rose. He didn’t say anything, nor did he leave his grip on Rose’s hand.

The thunderstorm

Image
Author's note: Would definitely recommend listening to 'Sign of the Times' by Harry Styles while reading this :) ------   If one thinks the screams and shouting-s are horrifying then they surely haven’t experienced silence, how loud and unbearable it can be. So loud that it pierces through your ears and wipes out all the patience in you and Daniel had faced both in the span of the past few hours. The calm was so scary that the thunderstorm was surely going to be more. So it was; it was one of the most horrifying thunderstorms Daniel had ever faced. Daniel couldn't comprehend what had happened. Those few hours were all blurry.  The screams. The cries. The sirens. It wasn't how they showed in the movies; there was no slow motion scene running in front of him. It had happened so quickly that he couldn't even process it completely. All he saw was her sad face, the apologetic smile, the truck and then blood. Though he later remembered to note the number of
